I’m not an insider on ships by any means, but just like the Zumwalt, DDX, and DD-1000 (hopefully I named those correctly), the Constellation class never really had a lot of energy behind it. Like LCS, they sort of did what was needed 10 years ago, but now so much has changed. Building the right ships has been the Navy’s problem since the days of the original six frigates. The Burkes are still outstanding and will be for some time to come. It seems like throughout history, the best ships in our fleet were simply revamped and retooled versions of existing classes repurposed to meet a specific need. That said, they need a Tico replacement, but for some reason can’t get anything off the drawing board. The Tico was essentially a revamped Spruance designed to carry the Aegis around. This is a world of AI, hypersonics, rail guns, and drone warfare yet we are still designing ships and training Sailors as if the next Battle of Jutland is right around the corner. Worrying about whether the new carrier will have steam or electric catapults is amateur hour. The question is whether or not the super carrier is even relevant in that environment or if we have come full circle to a new age of the battleship.
