The T-34 was a great primary trainer but I really liked the T-28. Made you feel like a real pilot; loud, powerful, challenging. Almost as challenging as the H-34, my Advanced helo trainer and JAX SAR aircraft. Loved VT-5 and the T-28 carrier quals, flying with the canopy open. ‘93-‘95 was COMTRAWING FIVE, Whiting and flew at least twice a week in the T-34C. Almost all solo. Lots of landings, spins, aerobatics and cross countries. The turbo version was outstanding; power and smooth. Got a half dozen flights in the T-6. What a trainer. Real power and smooth responsive controls. Loved it. After retirement got a flight in a refurbished T-34B that a civilian had purchased from the Navy. The cockpit was totally redone, totally glass. Still a recip engine but new and more powerful. He had spent lots of $s. Really nice. Not what we all flew at VT-1. Kermit

This picture reminds me of Summerdale in Fall of 1971 where you did your solo flights in the “Tiny Winny.”   The instructor would get out and sit in the shade adjacent to a small building like this in the center of the old airfield and keep track of their students in the pattern……..I suspect the picture if someplace more central to Pensacola, but the same principal…..waiting to fly or keeping track of your students…mgb
